APC wants INEC to sanction Enugu REC for misconduct

All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, to sanction the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu State, Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, for misconduct.

The Director of Media and Publicity, Enugu State APC Governorship Campaign Organisation, Emeka Okafor, made this call in a statement titled “The Visit of Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State to the Office of the Enugu North LG Council Chairman Unwarranted.”
Okafor noted that in recent times, INEC has been in the centre of the storm in the build-up to the 2015 general elections, with the inaccessibility and inadequacy of PVCs, electronic card readers and the preparedness or otherwise of the electoral body to conduct the polls dominating public discourse.
He observed that the heat generated by these factors has placed a burden on INEC to prove to Nigerians and the international community that it is capable of independently conducting free, fair and credible elections within the time frame designated for such elections.
“To sustain integrity, INEC staff, especially principal officers, must shun the tendency to hobnob with desperate politicians who are determined to scuttle the democratic process by shortchanging the due process of power transfer.
“It is on this note that the APC in Enugu State condemns the recent visit of the REC for Enugu State to the council chairman of Enugu North Local Government Area, Emeka Ede, on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.  The visit, which allegedly spanned almost three hours, is a taint on the integrity of the REC and denigrating of his office.
“At this time when public search light is beamed on INEC, it is expected that INEC staff should be careful in their official conduct. Any personnel whose action and conduct will tend to undermine the impartiality of INEC must face official sanctions,” Okafor said.
