NUC gives McPherson University, others clean bill of health

Regulatory body for all Universities in Nigeria, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has absolved McPherson University of any allegation of contravening its operational guidelines and procedures.

The university was erroneously listed by a national daily, last week as one of the likely universities whose operational licence might be suspended by the commission, but NUC’s management has since cleared it of flaunting any of its operational guidelines.
NUC’s Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ibrahim Yakasai, who gave McPherson University a clean bill of health, said the commission was not contemplating suspension of the operational licences of any university, especially that of McPherson.
He said: “We did not suspend the licence of McPherson University, or any other private university in Nigeria, as erroneously mentioned in the publication.
“All the private universities are in good standing, and in fact, we have accredited almost all their programmes. So, none of them have any problem as alleged.
“It is imperative for us to state correctly that no university operational license has been suspended and we have been doing our job as a commission, we do invite any university that has problem, so as to sort out their problems for them, if we are going to suspend any license we normally roll out advert in the newspapers and on radio or television”.
Meanwhile, following a rigorous resource verification exercise carried out on the university, NUC has granted an approval for two additional programmes to be offered by the institution, English language and International Relations.
According to Public Relations Officer of the University, Tony Ogunbiyi, he described McPherson University, established in 2012, as a distinct and vision-driven, leaders-producing institution that is highly committed to providing world class education to students from diverse backgrounds in Nigeria and beyond.
He said the university was equipped with modern IT facilities, noting that it is also known for academic discipline, moral probity and competitive edge which is revolutionalising the Nigerian education sector.
“The institution is an initiative of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Nigeria, which has taken education as one of its basic foundations, with a view to raising balanced champions, who will lead and bring desired change to their generation.
“We have unfettered line of communication with NUC and our activities are monitored through many sources with its Representative on our Governing Council.
“Following our sound academic performance, NUC recently granted us approval for two additional programmes (English language and International Relations) after a rigorous Resource Verification exercise.
“We remain committed to our vision of building a People of Excellence and Integrity for Service.”
The university has operated within the best practices and has never contravened NUC directives as alleged in the publication,” Ogunbiyi reiterated.
